Plot Twist

The new Iceland volcano coffee shop/visitor center offers a refuge and a natural gathering point in which one would be able to experience the monumental scale of the Hverfjall volcano amid the vast Icelandic landscape. It replaces the old visitor center and is oriented to maximize solar exposure for passive heating. Natural lighting is also maximized by having fully glazed walls on the building's long sides, backed by the building’s shallow depth. The building’s sculptural quality is a pure derivative of the functional response to allow for a gradual path to the rooftop viewing platform.

The building's charred wood cladding blends it into its context while its form stands out as a distinct landmark amidst the vast landscape. By combining these qualities into the design, the proposal strives to balance the practical and the sublime.
